People have been mining Peridot for a long, long time. The first mines, on an island in the Red Sea, date back to at least 1500 B.C. ²¹ The ancient Egyptians thought it protected them from nightmares, and some historians think Cleopatra’s famous "emeralds" might have actually been high-quality Peridot. ⁸ Today, most of the world’s Peridot comes from the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona. ²⁴ Hawaiian stories say the tiny peridot grains found on beaches are the tears of Pele, the goddess of volcanoes. ²

• Peridot and Sunstone (Mohs 6-7.2) are a bit softer. Protect them from scratches and clean them gently with warm, soapy water. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners. ^{19, 90}
