How It's Made (Geology Stuff)

Silver sheen obsidian is a volcanic glass, not a true crystal. It forms when silica-rich lava cools so quickly that its atoms don't have time to line up in a neat crystal pattern. Instead, they're frozen in a jumble, creating glass.

So... What Causes the Sheen?

The silvery shimmer comes from tiny things trapped inside the glass as it cooled. Sometimes it's microscopic gas bubbles that got stretched into thin, parallel layers. Light bounces off these layers, creating that moving glow.

In other cases, the sheen is caused by tiny, needle-like crystals of other minerals that lined up in the flowing lava. And sometimes, it's a mix of two slightly different types of glass that didn't fully blend, which also reflects light. Gem experts call this effect "chatoyancy" (from the French for "cat's eye").

Key Term: Chatoyancy: This is the technical term for the "cat's eye" effect seen in some gems. It's caused by light reflecting from parallel fibrous or needle-like inclusions within the stone, creating a movable, silky sheen.

Physical Traits

Because it's glass, obsidian breaks with smooth, curved surfaces, a feature known as a conchoidal fracture. This allows it to be shaped into an incredibly sharp edge. It has a hardness of about 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, which means it’s fairly hard but can be brittle.

A Very Sharp History

For Stone Age people, obsidian was a big deal. You can chip it to create an edge that's sharper than a modern surgical scalpel. That made it perfect for hunting tools, knives, and weapons for survival and defense.

The Aztec 'Smoking Mirror'

In ancient Mesoamerica, obsidian was more valuable than gold. Aztec warriors used it to make the macuahuitl , a scary-looking club lined with razor-sharp obsidian blades. It was also the go-to material for the knives used in religious ceremonies.

But they didn't just use it for fighting. Polished obsidian makes a dark, reflective mirror. Aztec priests used these mirrors, called tezcatl , for scrying (seeing the future) and communicating with gods.

One of their most important gods, Tezcatlipoca, was even called the "Smoking Mirror," a direct reference to these obsidian tools. We don't know for sure if they used the silver sheen type for this, but its spooky glow would have been perfect for the job.
