Unlike ancient gems, the Yooperlite story is brand new. It all started in the summer of 2017 with Erik Rintamaki, a rock hound from Michigan's Upper Peninsula (U.P.). 1 He was searching the shores of Lake Superior for agates at night with a UV flashlight. 1

At 4 a.m. on a beach near Sault Ste. Marie, his UV beam hit three small stones, and they lit up with an intense, fiery orange glow. 1 He knew this was weird. He searched online for "fluorescent minerals in Michigan" and found nothing, and no other collectors knew what they were. 1

He eventually took them to geologists at Michigan Technological University. They used an advanced scanning electron microscope and confirmed the glowing mineral was sodalite, a first for Michigan. 1 With his discovery validated, he needed a name.

Erik combined "Yooper," the nickname for U.P. residents, with "lite," from the mineral sodalite, and "Yooperlite" was born. 11 He trademarked the name, and a rock-hunting craze began. 2

How and Where to Find Them

Want to find your own? The best spots are the gravelly beaches of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, especially around Grand Marais, Whitefish Point, and the Keweenaw Peninsula. 5 But since glaciers spread them around, you might find them on other Great Lake shores or even in inland gravel pits in states like Minnesota. 22

Essential Gear Alert: A filtered 365nm longwave UV flashlight is non-negotiable for finding Yooperlites. Standard 395nm UV lights are ineffective and will not reveal the glow.

You have to hunt at night, from dusk onwards, for the best results. 22 The most productive times are in the spring after the ice melts or right after a big storm has churned up the beach. 5 Walk slowly along the water, sweeping your UV light back and forth across the rocks until you see that sudden flash of orange-yellow light. 11

Are They Rare? What Are They Worth?

So, how rare are Yooperlites? They aren't like diamonds. You can find a lot of them on certain Michigan beaches, but they're special because this is the first place this type of fluorescent sodalite was verified. 10, 18

A Yooperlite's value depends on a few things. A bright, intense glow covering most of the rock is best. 10 Bigger stones are worth more, and cool patterns, like swirls sometimes called "Galaxy" Yooperlites, also add value. 18

The glow is just a harmless reaction to ultraviolet light. It has nothing to do with radioactivity or any other dangerous process.

To clean your Yooperlites, just use mild water and a soft cloth. 43 Avoid using harsh chemicals, bleaches, or strong acids, as these can damage the stone's surface. 43 On the Mohs hardness scale, it's about a 5.5 to 6, so it's reasonably durable but can be scratched by harder materials like quartz. 9
